Saw Avatar recently.. finally. I was originally very excited about it, wanted to go on opening day, etc etc. But the more I saw, the less I wanted to see it... which isn't my usual pattern.
Rebecca wasn't interested at all - she saw the trailer, saw the "white man wants to drive peaceful natives away from their land to exploit it" angle, declared it hackneyed, and that was that. But then her brother announced he wanted to see it for his birthday, so we went. Originally we were going to see it in 3D, but after I reminded everyone that it's a long-running movie, we settled for non-3D. The theatre was empty when we got in... only a few more people shoed after we did... so seating wasn't an issue.
I really wanted to like this movie. But it seemed to fall short every time. The music wasn't memorable (alas), it felt like the movie dragged in the middle, and the climax of the movie just didn't grab me the way it should have . From a TECHNICAL aspect, it's an amazing movie. What Cameron has accomplished is huge, built on the shoulders of WETA. But I just wasn't moved, like I should have been. I don't know what I would have done differently. I... dunno. Meh.
